The Alfa Romeo BAT (Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica, i.e., Technical Aerodynamic Berlinetta) concept series originated in a joint collaboration project between Alfa Romeo and the Italian design house Bertone. The successful project began in 1953 and brought forward three cars: the BAT 5 in 1953, the BAT 7 in 1954, and finally the BAT 9 in 1955. All three cars were designed by Franco Scaglione. The series, looked to explore new frontiers of aerodynamic styling and car design: Research culminated in 1956 with the Abarth 750, built on a Fiat 600 base, when tests on the Monza high speed track set ten world records. In 2008, more than 50 years after the first concepts, a new BAT model was revealed: The BAT 11. The new BAT was based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and the classic BAT cars of the 50s.

In March 2014 Bertone confirmed that they had declared bankrupcy. Reading about this news left me in the same state as after I was made to watch the Aston (yes, I know it was a replica!) being blown up in that Bond movie. Jaw-dropped and gutted. Bertone had been in financial difficulties since 2007, forcing them to sell of their manufacturing plant to Fiat in 2009 and in 2011, to aution off some of their most prized concept cars.

On March 18th 2014, Bertone confirmed that it would be declared bankrupt if a suitable buyer wouldn't be found by the end of April. Sadly, on June 4th, the Gruppo Bertone, an institution that has been responsible for creating some of the most iconic cars known today, was declared bankrupt by a Turin court. Nearly all of its assets have been put up for sale.
