In 1945 Nazareno Fonticoli, a tailor, and Gaetano Savini, an entrepreneur, founded a company which they named after the once Italian owned Croatian Islands Brijuni, aka Brioni. The brand started out as a men's tailoring company, but would within a short period of time catch the attention of heads of state, business leaders and the movie industry.

The Brioni brand was rising and quickly became associated with ingeniousness and innovation: ready-to-wear Haute Couture; the first ever(!) men’s fashion show (1952), which was held in the Sala Bianca of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence; the Trunk Show, where latest collections were presented directly in stores, allowing for a more intimate and exclusive setting for customers; the “Hess” Collection (1957), which showed colourful dinner jackets, sending shockwaves through the industry and a tailoring school in 1985. Today Brioni is one the most prestigious fashion labels in the world.

In 2012 French group Kering acquired the company, appointing Brendan Mullane as Creative Director.
