Tahir Carl Karmali PHOTOGRAPHY (Kenya)
Artist Tahir Carl Karmali pays hommage to Kenyas ‘jua kali’ (Swahili for ‘fierce sun). The Swahili term was originally allocated to the city's travelling pedlars and artisans. Today the name refers to the workers in Kenya’s informal economy. "From fixing cars to cobbling together anything from electrical goods to clothing using discarded items, the ‘jua kali’ are talented repairmen, junkyard inventors and DIY entrepreneurs (each of Karmali's images picture real ‘jua kali’s together with items they use for their craft). ‘Jua kali’ are often regarded as recycling craftsmen who are able to create everyday commodities and works of art from almost any found object"...read more on theguardian
